All the conferences and roundtables of World VFX Day 2025 are now available !
World VFX Day 2025, the free global event, took place on December 8th from Important Looking Pirates’ studio in London. It brought together the global visual effects and animation community for a full day of conversation, reflection, and and forward-looking discussion.
This year’s edition welcomed more than 65 speakers from around the world, delivering over 15 hours of programming streamed live on YouTube. From creative inspiration and professional development to technology, leadership, and regional perspectives, the event once again highlighted the depth, resilience, and generosity of the VFX industry.
This year again, The Yard was very happy to support World VFX Day through sponsorship and active participation in the conference program. We were especially proud to contribute to two roundtables that addressed some of the most relevant topics facing the industry today.
Indie Leadership Roundtable

The Indie Leadership Roundtable brought together studio founders and managing directors, including The Yard’s Laurens Ehrmann, to discuss how independent studios are navigating one of the most challenging economic periods the VFX industry has experienced. Conversations focused on building sustainable business strategies in an unpredictable market, where long-term planning has become increasingly difficult and decisions are often made with limited visibility. The panel also explored the impact of AI and emerging technologies on workflows, bidding models, and perceived value, as well as the ongoing tension between collaboration and competition within the industry.
From The Yard’s perspective, Laurens Ehrmann shared insights into the studio’s strategy to attract international projects to France while strengthening the local ecosystem, retaining artists in the country, and encouraging experienced talent abroad to return and contribute their expertise. Tax incentives, market confidence, and cautious optimism for the year ahead were also part of the conversation.
Creative Technology

The Yard’s Head of CG, Tom Fonvillars, participated in the Creative Technology Roundtable, which focused on how new tools and technologies are being integrated into creative and production workflows across studios. Rather than speculative futures, the discussion centered on practical use cases and how technology is currently supporting efficiency, problem-solving, and creative iteration.
Speakers discussed the distinction between long-established machine learning techniques and newer generative AI tools, noting both the opportunities and the ethical, legal, and IP-related challenges they introduce. The conversation emphasized the need for discernment when adopting new technologies, identifying what truly adds value and what may introduce complexity without clear benefit.
Looking ahead, the panel reflected on how artists and technologists learn about emerging tools, the role of experimentation within studios, and the importance of ensuring that technology remains in service of creativity and craft rather than attempting to replace it.
A huge thank you to World VFX Day for organizing another fantastic event. Once again, it showed how willing VFX professionals are to share insights, perspectives, and experience with one another and with the wider global community.
