French Production Incentives Boost Country’s Visual Effects Sector

  • 2024-05-13
Variety has interviewed Laurens Ehrmann, CEO of The Yard, about the attractiveness of France concerning financial investment and skilled professionals in the VFX sector.

In a recent article, Variety reported on the continuous growth of France’s visual effects (VFX) industry, driven by strategic incentives and a burgeoning talent pool. The implementation of a comprehensive 10% bonus for international productions, alongside a 40% tax rebate on digital expenditures, has sparked a surge in post-production activity nationwide.

This favorable scenario has attracted both financial investment from international productions and skilled professionals, resulting in a notable repatriation of talent eager to contribute to a local industry offering promising prospects.

The Yard, with offices in Paris and Montpellier, stands out as a prime example of entities seizing upon this reverse brain-drain. Renowned for its contributions to projects like « Halo – Season 2, » « The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – Season 2, » and « The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol, » The Yard has fostered a workforce adept at international collaboration. Recent strategic hires, including Head of CGI Tom Fonvillars and Head of Environment Corentin Bachelet, from acclaimed studios like Framestore and DNEG, underscore The Yard’s ambition to tackle ambitious projects with passion and precision.

Laurens Ehrmann, founder and Senior VFX Supervisor at The Yard, was interviewed by Variety to provide insight into this emerging trend.

"Our entire working model is similar to those of studios in Canada, the United States and England. As a vendor, it’s important to mirror those formats and to work in the same systems. That facilitates coordination down the line."
