Catch a glimpse at The Yard’s work on Stranger Things 5 and how the teams brought the Upside Down to life with precision, innovation, and a deep respect for its established identity.

Over the course of 15 months, The Yard contributed to all eight episodes of Stranger Things 5, delivering a vast array of visual effects designed to both expand and preserve the series’ unmistakable aesthetic. This first collaboration with such an iconic show proved to be as rewarding as it was ambitious, culminating in a Genie Award for Best VFX in a Series earlier this year.

At the heart of this work lies the Upside Down—a world that may appear familiar, yet reveals immense complexity upon closer inspection. Its signature elements—crackling red lightning, drifting spores, invasive vines, and dense atmospheric fog—required far more than visual replication. Each shot demanded a careful orchestration of technical and artistic expertise.

Procedural vines were designed to react organically to light and environment, while dynamic fog systems were developed to interact convincingly with moving vehicles and characters. Spore simulations were meticulously designed and animated to match to match the creative direction. Full-CG assets, including vehicles and fractured windshields, were seamlessly integrated into live-action footage, ensuring a cohesive and immersive result.

One of the most compelling challenges was the duality of key locations. Familiar environments had to exist simultaneously in the real world and in the Upside Down. This required the team to extend, reconstruct, and reinterpret these spaces—preserving their recognizability while infusing them with a haunting, otherworldly transformation.
