Stranger Things 5 reigns on Netflix

  • 2026-01-07
With its Christmas release of Volume 2 and the historic New Year’s Eve finale, Stranger Things 5 holds the #1 spot for two consecutive weeks and enters the platform’s all-time Top 10.

Netflix’s flagship series closed its journey with unprecedented momentum. Volume 2 of Stranger Things 5 debuted on Dec. 25, followed by the two-hour series finale released on the evening of Dec. 31. The release strategy turned the end of the show into a global event — and audiences responded in record numbers.

For the past two weeks, Stranger Things 5 has ranked No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English-language TV shows, underscoring the enduring power of the franchise.

During the week of Dec. 29 to Jan. 4, the series amassed 31.3 million views worldwide and a staggering 325.6 million hours viewed, making it the most-watched title on the platform during that period.

According to Deadline, the release of the finale helped Netflix achieve its most-viewed New Year’s Day ever. While the streamer declined to disclose exact daily figures, it confirmed that the total number of views included seven full days of viewing for Episodes 1–7 and several days — plus additional hours — for the finale.

Continuing on previous trends, the entire Stranger Things collection continues to be part of Netflix’s Top 10 rankings. All five seasons are once more showed in the past week’s chart, showcasing the series’ enduring power to engage and captivate audiences years after its debut.

With last week’s viewership, Stranger Things Season 5 officially joined the Top 10 most-watched English-language Netflix series of all time, placing it ninth on the all-time chart measured over a show’s first 13 weeks of release.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, this record is even more impressive considering the results do not include those who attended the theatrical screenings of the finale. Those limited theatrical showings, held on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, generated an estimated $20 million to $25 million in box office revenue for cinema chains — a rare hybrid success for a streaming-first title.

As Variety notes, Stranger Things 5 still has months to accumulate additional views. Netflix counts viewing for split seasons over 91 days following each release, meaning:

  • Episodes 1–4 (released Nov. 26) will be tallied through Feb. 24
  • Volume 2 (released Dec. 25) through March 25
  • The series finale through March 31

Given that Season 5 launched with Netflix’s biggest-ever opening for an English-language series, totaling 59.6 million views, Variety suggests the final season could ultimately challenge for the top position.

At The Yard, we are incredibly proud to have played our part in bringing this iconic universe to life, and we want to extend our warmest congratulations to all the teams involved on this remarkable achievement.
