‘Damsel’ is a Netflix dark fantasy film directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and written by Dan Mazeau. Millie Bobby Brown stars as Elodie, a young woman who accepts a marriage proposal only to realize that she is being used to repay a royal family's ancient debts and must now escape while surviving attacks from the dragon lurking in the chasm. The rest of the principal cast consists of acclaimed Ray Winstone, Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, Nick Robinson, and Shohreh Aghdashloo voicing the dragoness.
On the wedding sequences, The Yard created digital matte painting to enhance the flowers staging in order to strengthen the warm atmosphere of Aurea's castle. For the climatic ending, our teams were also in charge of creating and animating a CG gold coin and replicating the crowd. The shots were also enhanced with some FX on leaves being carried away by the wind to strengthen the landing and breath of the dragon.
The cave shots were built in interior sets in London. For the “Womb Cave” shots, where Elodie discovers the messages left behind by previous princesses in this cave, The Yard provided detailed compositing work on the map and list of names drawn on the walls as well as on the previous princesses’ burnt and teared down clothes.
