Shaping the Depths of Khazad-dûm

  • 2026-03-26
From vast subterranean kingdoms to hostile frozen landscapes, our team at The Yard helped bring Middle-earth to life for The Rings of Power – Season 2, contributing to an award-winning visual journey recognized by BAFTA, the Emmys, and the Genie Awards.

Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power expands the mythos of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age with heightened tension, deeper character arcs, and richly layered worldbuilding across its eight episodes. As the only French VFX studio on the production, The Yard delivered approximately 250 visual effects shots over 18 months, including 11 full-CG sequences. The studio’s mission was both to ensure continuity with Season 1 and to significantly elevate the visual ambition of the series.

Reimagining Khazad-dûm as a Living Environment

At the heart of our work lies Khazad-dûm, the legendary Dwarven kingdom. For Season 2, this iconic setting evolved beyond a static backdrop to become a central narrative force. The Yard’s team focused on enhancing its scale, depth, and realism to transform it into a living, breathing world that actively supports the story.

The Yard deliovered 19 distinct environments, spanning the entire kingdom, from monumental mountain gates to vast underground caverns and lakes. Through a combination of CG environments and digital set extensions, we created towering halls, bridges, cliffside terraces, mining shafts, rivers, and reservoirs, all designed with strong narrative intent.

Building Scale Through Detail and Natural Integration

A key pillar of our work was the seamless integration of natural elements. Water, rock formations, vegetation, fog, fire, and reflective surfaces were crafted with precision to ensure physical credibility and interaction with characters and practical sets.

To further enhance realism, we developed advanced lighting systems capable of reproducing subtle variations between natural daylight filtering through rock fissures and the warm, shifting glow of torchlight. This allowed each environment to adapt to the emotional tone of the scene, reinforcing storytelling through atmosphere.

A Fully CG Opening Sequence of Unprecedented Scale

Beyond Khazad-dûm, our work extended to the creation of Forodwaith’s hostile environments. Built from the ground up, these tundra landscapes evolved into icy, unforgiving terrains. The fortress design emphasized sharp silhouettes and imposing structures, visually echoing the harshness and cruelty of the setting.

The season opens with the full-CG shots of this environment and  one of the show’s most ambitious sequences—an entirely CG environment transformation that sets the tone for the story ahead. This moment required over 50 concept iterations and extensive look development across lighting, FX, and environment design.

More than a single event, the sequence was conceived as a cascading physical phenomenon, with layered effects and evolving visuals that serve as a metaphor for the spreading shadow across Middle-earth. Its production alone represented a significant portion of the season’s overall post-production effort.

Khazad-dûm was designed as a responsive world, enriched by complex FX simulations and dynamic interactions. The quality of the complex work undertaken by the VFX teams on The Rings of Power Season 2 has been widely recognized. The series won the BAFTA TV Craft Award for Best Visual Effects and received a nomination at the 2025 Emmy Awards. In addition, The Yard was honored with two Genie Awards for Best VFX in a Series and Best FX Simulations.

These recognitions reflect the scale, ambition, and craftsmanship behind the project—and reinforce our commitment to creating environments that are not just seen, but experienced.

At the 2025 Genie Awards ceremony, The Yard received the Genie Award for the best VFX in a series for their work on "The Rings of Power - Season 2" (Amazon MGM Studios), streaming on Prime Video.
