From concept to final animation, explore the award-winning work of The Yard to bring new creatures and characters to life.
With Predator: Badlands, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, The Yard reached a significant milestone in its creative journey. Entrusted with more than 100 VFX shots, including the film’s opening five-minute sequence, the studio delivered full-CG environments, complex FX, and a few creatures and digital characters.

At the heart of this project lies creature creation and animation—one of the most demanding disciplines in visual effects. As recently detailed in an article published by The French Centre for Cinema (CNC), far from being simple visual enhancements, these creatures are conceived as fully fledged narrative elements. Their design requires a careful balance between artistic vision and technical execution, blending practical references with advanced digital tools to achieve believable performances on screen.
For the film’s opening sequence, The Yard developed three original CG creatures from scratch. From initial concept exploration to final animation, the team defined their anatomy, movement, and behavior to fit seamlessly into a harsh and Darwinian ecosystem. Inspired by real-world animal dynamics yet shaped by distinctly alien characteristics, these creatures embody both realism and imagination. Every detail—from subtle motion to environmental interaction—contributes to grounding them in the film’s world.
Beyond creature design, the project also involved complex collaboration within an international VFX pipeline. The Yard worked with assets from Weta and Trixter, adapting digital character models while ensuring visual continuity across studios. This was particularly crucial in high-intensity sequences, such as the combat scene set in a vast crystal cave, where digital doubles, animation, FX, and compositing had to come together seamlessly.
This ambitious work was recognized at the Genie Awards, where The Yard received two awards for their work on Predator Badlands, including Best Visual Effects in a Film and Best Characters & Creatures. These accolades highlight not only the scale of the project, but also the studio’s growing role as a creative partner on international productions.

More broadly, Predator: Badlands reflects the rising influence of the French VFX industry. Supported by institutions such as Film France CNC and showcased at events like PIDS Enghien, French studios are increasingly recognized for their ability to combine technical excellence with strong artistic identity. With experienced talent and attractive production incentives, France has become a key destination for large-scale film projects.
Building on this momentum, The Yard continues to expand its creative involvement, contributing from early concept stages and developing its services dedicated to design.
